Soccer Equipment for Wayamba!
Cheers erupted from the 100 children assembled outside Wayamba Primary School when they saw the World Cup soccer balls and 15 team uniforms emerge from Jacob Jackson’s sports bag. The Head Teacher, her assistants, the Elders of the community and the Mayor of the Municipality all applauded heartily, too. Wayamba is a small village on the outskirts of Tamale, the capital of Ghana’s dry and impoverished Northern Region.
“When you do both sports and school, you can have a good life,” said Jacob, a Research Assistant with E.T. Jackson and Associates Ltd. and a student at the University of British Columbia. He had raised funds and donations from friends and family in Canada to pay for the equipment, a gift that was inspired by the valiant performance of Ghana’s Black Stars at the World Cup in South Africa.
“Now, with these balls and uniforms, we can form a real team and play other communities,” said the Head Teacher. “We appreciated your friendship very much. And we would like to cooperate with you on other projects, too.”
This effort in micro-philanthropy benefited from the support of Ghana’s Institute for Policy Alternatives, a long-standing partner of Jackson and Associates, which also contributed to the project. Special thanks are due IPA’s Zulfawu Sulemana, Muri Gariba and founder Dr. Sulley Gariba.
What’s next? Jacob is now raising funds for the construction of a new Kindergarten at Wayamba, and already has several substantial pledges from interested Canadians. There is more to come for this partnership!
